Fair Park Update - July, 2011

FAIR PARK'S BIG THOUGHT
This month Fair Park will host an amazing adventure camp.

Big Thought
has teamed with the Dallas Independent School District and Fair Park campus members to conduct a Summer School Camp experience for 2,500 middle school students in grades 7, 8 and 9. This unique summer camp will turn the Fair Park grounds and museums into a wondrous learning laboratory for children to experience firsthand the importance and application of many of the subjects learned in school.

Students will explore the science of water by studying the Leonhardt Lagoon's ecosystem, examining its animal and plant life. They will meet and interact with professionals from diverse career fields including historians, scientists, curators, researchers, water conservationists, engineers, photographers, set designers and the list goes on. The camp culminates with students and their parents enjoying the Dallas Summer Musicals' production of "Guys and Dolls" at the Music Hall.

For more than 20 years, Big Thought has developed and implemented quality educational programming for children, families and teachers across North Texas. Fair Park is proud to be working with Big Thought on this innovative and creative educational project.
ROCK YOUR PARK
Across the country park and recreation departments are observing July as Recreation and Parks Month by showcasing their parks, recreational facilities and leisure programs they offer individuals and families all year long. This year‚'s theme is ‚ÄúRock Your Park.‚Äù

As part of the celebration, Dallas Park and Recreation hosted the first-ever “I Love My Park” video contest. The 2-4 minute video entries featured youth performing songs, dances, poems, skits and hip-hop raps about their favorite leisure activity. The winning video will debut later this month at the City of Dallas performing arts competition.
CHECKERED FLAG
It‚'s the last lap for the Texas Automotive Museum, which shuts its engines ‚Äì and its doors ‚Äì next month to make way for the State Fair of Texas. The $30 million collection of vintage automobiles races back to the Grand Place at the end of the State Fair. For museum information, call (214) 533-4891.
